Loyal to Kitchen Aid until I bought this hood fanWe built a house and we decided to go with this model as we always liked how reliable Kitchen Aid appliances were in our past house - we also bought a counter top gas stove, fridge, dishwasher and wall oven and microwave for our kitchen. We were very happy Kitchen Aid customers until we started using the hood fan.
Since day one, we are having an issue: Grease spilling from the back of the hood to the backsplash walls. On our first time cooking in our new house, we pan seared meat and vegetables and after we finished, we noticed grease spilling from the hood's back to the backsplash wall and grease accumulating at the corners of the flat surface at the bottom of the hood. It was day one of use, all brand new and it felt like I had the hood for 5 years and never cleaned the filters - it was just disgusting.
We complained to the builder and to the company who installed the fan and they had explained that it's doing its job, which is to pull air and that the hood was made more to pull steam....not good for grease. Also, they commented that it was not the first time they had complains like that for the product....
I was baffled and disappointed as we had Kitchen Aid Over the Range Microwave and never had issues and a friend of mine who has a Whirlpool equivalent of this hood do not have issues like I do. I hope you can do better next time

Issues after 3 months :(We started having an issue about a month ago, at it being only 2 months old. Lights would come on by themselves. I thought perhaps it needed a thorough cleaning, so I keep it extra clean once a week. But as of right (month 3), the front two lights don’t turn on. Really angry, as this wasn’t cheap and we had it professionally installed. All our appliances are new, and our Kitchenaid fridge lights stopped working 2 weeks ago. After reading other people’s issues, I wish we never got this hood or the fridge.

Very pleasedBought this a few months ago. Love it. Very stylish, quiet. Lighting is good. Very pleased with the unit. Have always liked kitchen aid. At the same time we purchased the kitchen aid oven/microwave wall unit and induction stove too

Quiet, easy to use and attractiveWe installed this in our last house and loved it; now in a new house and have just ordered it again to replace the one here. I like it has a temperature sensor that kicks it to higher speed when range temperatures increase

Poor quality -- motor broke after 3 yearsWe are really disappointed in the quality of this product. The motor broke just after 3 years, which costs about $600 plus installation cost. We did not expect that poor quality from KitchenAid.

Does Not Work With InductionI actually purchased the 30" model, but I'm re-posting my review here to qualify for the sweepstakes. I assume that my experience with the 30" model would also apply to the 36" model.
This unit has a automatic shutoff feature that senses heat from the cooktop and turns the unit off after a few minutes if no heat is detected. We have an induction cooktop, which of course does not radiate heat itself but heats pots through induction. Even if we had two or three large pots going on the cooktop, the fan would turn off. There is no way to bypass the shut off. We asked the salesperson and Whirlpool customer service if there was any problem with induction before installing the unit. None of the marketing material, the salespeople at the appliance store, nor Whirlpool customer service were aware of this design flaw. And of course you can't return these appliances once they're out of the box, although the retailer where we purchased it did reluctantly take it back after we paid a hefty restocking fee.
There is a corresponding auto-on feature that is supposed to turn the unit on when heat is detected and also automatically adjust the fan speed. That feature also did not work with our induction cooktop.
Other issues which should convince you to avoid this product:
- Whirlpool customer service is completely useless. I contacted them for ducting requirements before installing the unit. All they would do is to refer me to a local installer. However, the installer would only tell me that they "don't do ducting", although they would be happy to charge me $200 to hang the unit on the wall as long as the ducting is already in place.
- The unit is very clumsy to hang compared to the Venmar hood I replaced it with. The hanging screws are located in the motor housing which is made of very cheap and flimsy sheet metal. The Venmar, on the other hand, provided a proper hanging bracket that is much easier to position and install, and is also much more stable and reliable.

Effective, quiet, but odd auto featureThis hood has been in use for a month now. Multistage fan works well and is really quiet on slow. Much louder on high as you'd expect.
The "Auto" feature doesn't work as described. The owners manual says that auto feature turns itself off if it hasn't been used for 2 hours. We've found that the auto function is always active until you press it to turn it off. The light that identified the auto feature is working goes out after 2 hours, but not the auto action. So sometimes you're cooking and the fan comes on automatically even though there's nothing lit on the unit to tell you that the auto function is turned on. It can be a bit of a surprise when you're not expecting it. To turn the auto feature off the auto light off you have to do it when you've finished cooking (when the button is still lit), or turn it back on in manual and then turn it off in auto, you can't turn it off unless the button is lit.

Great FeaturesWe bought this vent, for our newly installed kitchen. Love it as it has an auto sensor. You just turn it on and it senses when to turn on or off. Or you have the option of putting on your low, med or high. It also has two white lights and if you prefer dimmer one soft yellow light.

Powerful! We have been using this range hood for five years over a six-burner gas cooktop and are really happy with its performance. The boost setting is super powerful for those searing moments! Man Chef of the house likes the auto setting function.
