HOW TO OVEN GRILL

To oven grill, start by adjusting the racks to be near the heating element, or use a broiler pan. Then, increase your oven’s temperature to 500°F. Follow these detailed steps for more help and insights on grilling with your oven.

WHAT IS A GRILL PAN?

A grill pan is a skillet designed with raised ridges along the cooking surface. These ridges create the flavourful char marks associated with outdoor grilling. For this method, it is important to use a cast iron grill pan, as these are built to withstand an oven’s high heat.

1. ARRANGE YOUR OVEN RACKS FOR GRILLING

If you opt to use a grill pan, position your oven racks so they are close to the heating element. This step is unnecessary with a broiler pan.

2. PREHEAT YOUR OVEN WITH AN EMPTY GRILL PAN INSIDE

To oven grill, the cooking surface must be as hot as the oven. Insert an empty cast-iron grill pan inside your oven, and then preheat the oven to 500°F. If you choose to grill with the broiler, put an empty broiler pan in your oven’s broiler compartment or on the top rack. An oven and pan may take roughly 20-30 minutes to reach the desired temperature.

3. GRILL YOUR FOOD

Once the grill pan has reached the required temperature, add your food to the pan and cook similar to how you would on a grill. It’s typically best to turn the food halfway through the cooking process.

HOW TO GRILL USING THE KITCHENAID® SMART OVEN+

KitchenAid® brand offers the Grill Attachment, which connects to a powered hub inside select KitchenAid® Smart Oven+ models to activate the grill heating element. Once attached, your options are to:

  • Manually enter the time and temperature

  • Select one of your oven’s pre-programmed grill settings.

Once the grill attachment preheats to the desired temperature, you can either:

  • Manually control the cooking.

  • Select the grilling mode with timing suggestions about flipping, turning or removing your food.

Heat will be applied directly to the surface of your food to help achieve that classic caramelization and char. The Grill Attachment also helps reduce smoke and eliminates flare-ups, which often happen with outdoor grilling.

ARE GRILLING AND BROILING THE SAME?

Grilling and broiling are different cooking techniques, but can produce close to similar results.

Grilling requires meats or vegetables to be cooked at high temperatures, either on metal grates above hot coals or over an open flame.

Broiling is the method of cooking food on a preheated broiler pan inside an oven and about 2-6 inches beneath the heating element. These two cooking techniques use intense direct heat to cook and caramelize food.

HOW TO GRILL VEGETABLES IN THE OVEN

Position your oven racks close to the oven’s heating element, then put an empty grill pan on the rack. Preheat the oven to a high temperature, usually between 400-500°F. You must allow the grill pan to heat along with the oven. Lastly, add vegetables to the pan and grill until they are cooked to your liking.

HOW TO GRILL MEAT IN AN OVEN

To grill meat in the oven, position an oven rack close to the heating element, but make sure to allow for some space in between. The heating element should not come in contact with the food. Next,  put a grill pan in the oven and preheat to a high temperature (400-500°F).

Then, add the meat to a grill pan and grill until it reaches the desired temperature. Monitor with a meat thermometer and avoid flipping the meat too often, as this may affect the flavour and caramelization.

Your KitchenAid® Smart Oven+ Grill Attachment lets you grill in your oven year-round. You can make beautifully charred pork chops or chicken breasts with settings that offer advice on when to flip and remove from the heat. Another option is to pan sear a steak on your stovetop for a stunningly crispy caramelized flavour.
